Alternative Ways to Exercise Without Going to the Gym

Let face it, we’re not all gym people. And even if you are there are times when the gym is just the last place you feel like going too. The problem is we still need to exercise for our health and, if we’re being honest, to look good! I for one am a person that gets bored with too much routine, so eventually I get a little sick of the typical gym regimen. That’s why I try to change up my workouts as frequently as possible and find unique ways to get my exercise in. You might be surprised but there are actually plenty of alternatives to going to the gym.

  • Take a walk

Walking is one of the easiest exercises. If I am feeling super lazy but I still want to burn some calories, I put on some headphones and take a walk through the park. Walk around the neighborhood, walk to a park, walk to the store instead of driving, walk to a friend’s house, just walk! Research says you should aim for 10,000 steps everyday. This burns about 500 calories a day, which results in losing 1 lb per week. Living in NY taught me the value in walking. You walk everywhere out there. In the first few months I lived there I was dropping lbs with no conscious efforts and it was all because of just the walking!

  • Swimming

We are not all lucky enough to live near a body of water or a pool but if you do use it! Swimming is a great exercise that not only burns fat but tones your muscles as well. Do laps around the pool or get some friends and play a round of pool volleyball. If you live near an ocean go battle some waves – jump over them, dive under them, crash into them. I promise you’ll feel it the next day.

  • Hiking

I love hiking because you not only get to burn some calories but you also get to enjoy some nature which I believe is so healing. Again we are not all lucky enough to live near a place where we can hike, but if you do take advantage of it! And if you’re not sure if there are any trails near you get on google and do some research. You’d be surprised how many places actually have some type of hiking trails.

  • Join a sports league

Look up an adult sports league and join it! This is a super fun way to get in shape and also meet some new people. There’s usually a wide variety of sports leagues available – basketball, soccer, volleyball, softball, flag football, ultimate Frisbee, etc. Don’t worry if you’ve never played, your teammates will teach you! If there’s no teams near you, start your own! Grab a group of friends and get to it.

  • Dancing

This is my favorite alternative exercise by far. It’s easy, it’s fun and you can do it with a drink in your hand! Turn on some music and dance like no one’s watching. It’s that simple to burn some lbs. You can also find a YouTube dance tutorial and learn a new dance. It’s like a dance class in your living room!

  • Join a fitness class

Sometimes I need someone to push me in order for me to get a good workout in. In those instance I like to go to a fitness class.  There’s a wide variety of classes out there – yoga, boxing, zumba, cycling, barre,etc. There are also plenty of video classes you can try for free on YouTube.

  • Cleaning

You might not realize it but cleaning is actually a solid workout. I like to blast some music and get to work. Detail clean the whole house and I promise you will feel it the next day. It’s a great way to keep your body and your house in tip top shape.

  • Play on a playground

Embrace your inner child and go play on a playground – just don’t trample any kids. Run around, swing on the monkey bars, climb the ladders. Get in shape and feel like a kid again.
